GLOBAL “V-DAY” FESTIVAL COMES TO ORANGE COUNTY, WITH ONLY HIGH SCHOOL PRODUCTION
AT TARBUT V’TORAH

By special arrangement with V-Day, Tarbut V'Torah School  presents a benefit staged reading of A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer.  All proceeds benefit Katrina Warriors and Women Forward.  Additional monies may be donated during the reception or by sending a check directly to the school, marking it for the V-Day fundraiser.  All donations are tax-deductible. The performance is recommended for mature audiences, due to the graphic nature of the topics being discussed.

This staged reading features student and faculty performers, and is produced by Leah Greenbaum, a current senior at Tarbut V'Torah School.  According to Greenbaum, TVT’s production is full of  “heartbreaking stories and compassionate performers.” Greenbaum approached the school to produce this event, after reading the book and wanting to get more involved in educating others about the urgent need to end violence against women and girls.  “I wanted to get involved because it was shocking to discover how epidemic this

problem really is. A woman is raped in the US every two minutes. I can’t imagine anyone in the audience who won’t be moved to action by this performance. ”

V-Day is a global movement to end violence against women and girls that raises funds and awareness through benefit productions of Playwright/Founder Eve Ensler’s award winning play The Vagina Monologues and her new book A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer. Each year V-Day increases awareness by focusing on a specific group of women in the world who are resisting violence with courage and vision. In 2008, the spotlight is turned to New Orleans and the Gulf South. The spotlight will highlight the daily ongoing work of women in their communities who have steadfastly kept New Orleans and the Gulf South alive with little to no resources. These women - “Katrina Warriors” - will be honored for their strength and resilience in the face of devastating loss. The spotlight will bring global attention and funds so that women may be safe and empowered in a region whose pulse beats like no other.  10% of TVT’s benefit’s proceeds will be donated to these “Katrina Warriors.”

Because violence against women is also a local issue, Greenbaum chose Women Forward as the local recipient of 90% of the benefit’s proceeds.  Women Forward is a Jewish Family Services program that assists women "in transition" to become financially self-sufficient. Many of their clients are homeless women and single mothers. The money raised at Tarbut’s event has been "earmarked" for a client that has been a victim of domestic violence.

While the V-Day event is over, we are still accepting donations to the Katrina Warriors and Women Forward through the TVT V-Day event project.
